Melodie – a Freebody electric canoe – On Hold

A clinker built electric canoe

Melodie is a charming open electric canoe built of teak, mahogany and ash with clinker planking on ash frames with a teak keel. She was privately commissioned by a gentleman with a mooring of 22ft. So successful was she as a design that Mr Freebody used her to promote a whole range of clinker electric canoes with the largest built to date being some 28ft I believe. Some owners have added canopies while others prefer the feeling of being at one with nature, silently cruising the backwaters of the Thames where other boats would struggle to pass. The seating arrangements with comfortable floor cushions and high seat backs give a feeling of decadence and luxury. She will seat 6 passengers and is steered from a side wheel. In keeping with Freebody tradition there is concealed internal lighting and wine or champagne glass holders. A hand painted kingfisher is perched adjacent to the signwriting which complements the internal furnishings in kingfisher blue.

Under the floor lies a silent running electric motor and gearbox supplied by Brimbelow Engineering and powered by 5 12 volt deep cycling batteries which give at least 8 hours running time at a cruising speed of 4 knots.

More recently Melodie was repainted and revarnished by Henwood and Dean for the previous owner.

Melodie is available for purchase with a bespoke trailer (at extra cost).
