Summer Wine

Charming red cedar epoxy built canopied launch

When the owner wanted a boat to enjoy silent cruising in harbours and on rivers, he commissioned a sailing yacht boatbuilder in Wales to build his ideal open launch. He calls it an open “lunch” boat as he has enjoyed many years of dining on board with his family. The boat is solidly built of Western red cedar strip planking on laminated iroko ribs with solid mahogany furnishings and teak decks. At the time of build he chose a 3 kw Lynch pancake motor which has served his well over the past almost 20 years. The 8 x 6 volt batteries were replaced three years ago and you can expect a cruising speed of 6 mph for many hours. There is a removable tiller but usually the side wheel is the steering position of choice. The full length canvas canopy has removable side screens and the boat comes with a full inventory including 2 chairs which can be turned around for dining around the table which has two flaps to enable it to open out when in use. The trailer is serviceable for short journeys.
For use on the Thames or the Broads a new Boat Safety Scheme certificate would be required. This would be a good boat to launch and recover for occasional use as while it looks like a wooden boat the hull doesn’t move due to the epoxy/cedar construction.
