Electric canoes are especially graceful having come to the Thames initially at the turn of the twentieth century. They were always propelled by electric propulsion units as this type of motive power was rapidly replacing steam at that perior. Otter IX was the third reproduction electric canoe to be built by R. M. Latham of the Steam & Electric Launch company in the early nineties and she has had only the one owner since new who has look after her well with revarnishing etc regularly carried out in situ by Hambleden Mill Marina throughout this time. She has beautifully crafted mahogany and spruce laid decks, a mahogany interior, and a hand laid GRP hull. She has always been moored in a boathouse and has spent every winter covered and ashore. Powered by a Nelco 1.4 KW motor, she had 8 new Trojan batteries, charger, complete revarnishing and a new full length hooped cover in 2008. The buttoned velvet cushions are in burgundy to match the waterline and signwriting. She will comfortably seat 6 to 7 passengers. The left hand photo shows the first of the contemporary electric canoes built by the Steam and Electric Launch Company which had green livery. Otter IX is identical other than the colour of the trim. The current owner saw the boat in the photo and was inspired to order one for himself. The fittings are chromed rather than plain brass for ease of upkeep. Her mooring may be available for a new owner if required.
