Golden Hind – a Gibbs open launch
An exceptional Gibbs motorised open launch
Golden Hind is an exceptional nineteen thirties motorised open launch built by the Thames builders Gibbs of Trowlock Island. Gibbs built some very fine launches always with the same handsome transom and long forward decks. As other of their contemporaries they sourced petrol engines from the North American manufacturers Gray marine. The 6 cylinder is a fine example and spares can be easily sourced from Van Ness in the USA. The original hand books for engine maintenance are included in the sale.
The current owner bought the boat from the River Trent where the engine was rebuilt in 2010 by S.T. Mills boatyard near Trent Lock in Notthingham. The cockpit was refitted in varnished mahogany three years ago by Henwood and Dean when the decks were also revarnished and an automatic bilge pump fitted. A period Francis spotlight for the forward deck was also added at that time.
The boat is built of fine Honduras mahogany on oak ribs. Cushions, winter cover and canopy on ash and metal frame are all in excellent order. This boat would make a fine alternative to a slipper stern launch for someone looking for a real head turning vintage river or lake launch.
